“Fishing kept us out of trouble” Memories of the Berkeley waterfront

A new episode of East Bay Yesterday highlights the Berkeley Fishing Oral History Project, an interdisciplinary research project funded by an SF State Climate HQ Mini-Grant. Led by SF State faculty Camille Antinori, Venoo Kakar, and Pavlina Latkova, the project documents generations of people who have fished along the Berkeley waterfront for recreation, community, well-being, and sustenance. Through local fishers’ stories, the project examines how gentrification, displacement, and shoreline development affect equitable access to the Bay Area’s public spaces—while celebrating the cultural and intergenerational traditions that connect communities to the natural world.
